Alleged Russian SU24 shot down over Turkey and Pilot captured by Syrian opposition – More updates

According to Turkish officials they apparently warned the pilots ten times that the jet was in Turkish airspace. The Russian MOD claim that the jet was in Syrian airspace at all times and shot down from the ground.

Russian MOD news release (24 Nov 2015): ‘Today an aircraft from the Russian air group in the Syrian Arab Republic crashed on the territory of Syria supposedly shot down from the ground.

The aircraft was flying at the altitude of 6000 metres. The status of the Russian pilots is being defined.

According to the preliminary data, the pilots managed to eject from the warplane.

The circumstances of the crash are being defined.

During all the flight time, the aircraft was flying only within the borders of the Syrian territory. That was registered by objective monitoring data.’

It is still unclear if the jet was shot down from the air or ground, Turkey claims the jet was shot down by two F16’s and both pilots ejected. The jet reportedly came down on the Syrian side of the border in the Latakia area.

According to a Turkmen group (possibly the Western deemed moderate pro opposition group Sultan Murad brigade), one pilot has allegedly been captured and they are looking for the second but their status is still unconfirmed.

The alleged Turkmen group that has captured one of the Russian pilots has not been confirmed as yet but a number of groups are known to operate in Syria.

Interestingly the Todays Zaman (a Turkish news outlet) reported two days ago that Syrian Turkmens have asked for Turkeys help regarding Syrian government and Russian airstrikes in Latakia, after forcing many to flee towards the Turkish border.

UPDATES (Warning: Graphic Content):

According to the Independent, Russian and Turkish helicopters have been dispatched to search for the pilots.

First Images released of Russian pilots of jet allegedly shot down over Syria taken from Green lemon twitter page. Currently one pilot is reportedly dead, one alive.

The opposition group that has located the Russian pilots is still to be confirmed. It also remains to be seen what will happen if a Russian rescue team locates the opposition group that has located the Russian pilots.

It appears to be the opposition group 10th Coastal Brigade that has located the Russian pilots. According to a commander of the 10th Coastal Brigade, Abu Ibrahim al Sheghri, operating in Latakia Rif, the Russian pilots were machine gunned as they descended after engaging parachutes.

It is unclear still if this means both pilots are dead or if one is still alive as previously reported.

Turkey have released a map allegedly showing the downed Russian SU24 crossing the southern tip of Turkey. Independent confirmation is required however, if it did, it remains to be seen if Turkish jets shot down the Russian jet while in Turkish airspace or after it had left Turkish airspace.

One of the pilots was subsequently killed by Western deemed moderate group the 1st Coastal Division and armed with US TOW missiles following rigorous CIA vetting procedures.

The same group, that on the same day, released a video showing the capture of a watch tower in the Jabal/Jebel Turkman area, Latakia along with Jabhat al Nusrah (al Qaeda in Syria) that released images of the same tower captured by them on the same day.
