Interestingly the 1st coastal division (Western deemed moderate group supplied with US TOW missiles) is currently featuring in the media after shooting at Russian pilots parachuting to the ground from their downed SU24 by the Turkish military, while releasing videos and images of captured areas from the Syrian Arab Army (and associated militias) in the mountainous region of Latakia known as Jabal/Jebel Turkman. But so has Jabhat al Nusrah (al Qaeda in Syria).

Are they working in direct cooperation or just mutual tolerance of each others presence?

The following images and videos have been released by Jabhat al Nusrah’s Latakia media arm (al Manarah al Bayda’ Foundation for Media is the overall media outlet) and the 1st Coastal Division Youtube page.

Jabhat al Nusrah:

Images below are taken from a Jabhat al Nusrah twitter page showing alleged gains made in Jabal/Jebel Turkman, a mountainous region in Latakia, Syria, populated predominantly by Turkmens.

The same region that the Russian SU24 jet was downed and pilot killed allegedly by machine gun fire while parachuting to the ground.

Notice the tower on stilts standing over a building in two out of the four images below.

Notice the bent tree to the right hand side of the watch tower structure.

The description that accompanies the following images translates as: From inside # Tlh_alzahah after cleared of abomination Nusayris in Jbl_turkman # # Latakia’

UPDATE 25 November 2015: The video is now working again.

The following video was released on the 24 November 2015 by the 1st Coastal Division. The description of the video is translated from the original source. This video does not show the tower structure but assaults taking place in its vicinity.

  • Youtube video (24 Nov 2015) – First coastal band :: coolest cover the wounds with heavy machine guns in the vicinity of bright tower in Mount Turkmen:

Conclusion:

Notice both make reference to bright tower or watch tower at the top of a hill / mountain in Latakia’s Jabal/Jebel Turkman area.

The structure seen in both the 1st Coastal Division and Jabhat al Nusrah images and videos is identical and both released on the same day.

There is also a bent over tree seen to the right of the watch tower structure in both Jabhat al Nusrah’s images and the 1st Coastal Division images.

This means that both  sets of images were taken in almost exactly the same location.

Again, a Western deemed moderate group, armed with US TOW missiles by the West, appears to be working in direct cooperation with Jabhat al Nusrah (al Qaeda in Syria).

This should raise serious questions over the vetting procedure adopted by the US and its allies in which a moderate deemed group can work in direct cooperation with al Qaeda in Syria. The same al Qaeda that an entire country was invaded for, Afghanistan.

UPDATE 28 November 2015:

Possible location found of the watch tower area shown in the images and videos above. It appears to be at the top of a large hill, South of Chavkaran and East of Dereyort in Latakia, Syria.

Interestingly the location highlighted in the second image by the orange box, just North East of the hill (red box) translates from Arabic as ‘Bright’, the same reference used by Jabhat al Nusrah and the 1st Coastal Division when describing the watch tower as ‘bright hill’ and ‘bright tower’.

It also appears to be referred to as Zahia/Zahiya height, Zahia/Zahiya translates roughly as ‘brilliant’ or ‘bright’.

Another fundamentalist Islamic group and Jabhat al Nusrah affiliate Sham al Islam (Islamic Movement of the Levant), also assisted the 1st Coastal Division and Jabhat al Nusrah in taking the watch tower area as seen in the images below allegedly showing the group celebrating victory.

Sham al Islam is part of Jabhat Ansar al Din, a coalition of fundamentalist Islamic groups that includes Harakat Fajr ash-Sham al-Islamiya.
