According to the FSA’s media arm the RFS Media Office, the National Coalition for Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces or the Syrian National Coalition, is requesting arms supply from the UN security council and any allied countries to assist it’s fight against IS, the Syrian government military and associated militias including fundamentalist Shi’a Islamic groups and Russian forces.
‘The Syrian Coalition calls upon the United Nations, the UN Security Council, and governments of friendly countries to provide urgent and immediate protection to civilians in areas under attack by ISIS terrorist group and the murderous Assad regime.
The arming of the Free Syrian Army to counter ISIS and the Assad regime is a must.’
- RFS Media Office news article (28 May 2016) – Syrian Coalition Calls for Arming the FSA to Counter ISIS & Assad Terror:
The Syrian National Coalition mission statement states that it exists to establish a free and democratic Syria following the overthrow of the Assad government.
With that in mind, it appears strange that the recent calls for arms fails to mention it’s opposition to the many fundamentalist Sunni Islamic groups and coalitions operating in syria also fighting IS, the Syrian government military and associated militias including fundamentalist Shi’a Islamic groups and Russian forces, but do not wish to see a democratic, free Syria.
In stark contrast, the miriad of fundamentalist Sunni Islamic opposition groups and coalitions wish to see Syria established as an Islamic Emirate and ruled under Sharia Law.
Such groups include, but are not limited to:
- The Islamic Front
- Ahrar al Sham
- Ansar al Sharia
- Ajnad al Sham
- Imam Bukhari Jamaat
- Army of Mujahedeen
- The Army of Islam
- Sham Legion
- Jabhat al Nusrah
- Jabhat Ansar al Din
- Jund al Aqsa
- The Turkistan Islamic Party
- The Army of Conquest
